Steel/Polyethylene/Ceramics

At present, ceramic bulletproof insert plate is widely used and occupies the mainstream. Let’s introduce the principle of ceramic insert plate and the differences between them.
The ceramic bulletproof insert plate is generally made of ceramics, polyethylene PE and other materials. Its principle is that when the bullet strikes the bulletproof insert plate, the bullet first strikes the uppermost ceramic layer.

The ceramic breaks when it encounters the bullet with huge kinetic energy, and it will transfer the huge impact energy at the impact point to the surrounding to absorb the huge kinetic energy of the bullet. When the bullet passes through the ceramic layer, it has lost most of its kinetic energy.

When the bullet reaches the polyethylene layer, the polyethylene consumes the bullet kinetic energy by stretching and wraps the warhead and shrapnel. This process has little impact on the human body and plays a good protective role.

The ceramics in the ceramic bulletproof insert plate generally use the following three different materials:

  1. Alumina ceramics
    Alumina ceramics have the largest density among the three materials. Under the same area, the bulletproof insert plate made of alumina ceramics is much heavier. But the price of alumina ceramics is very low. Therefore, some customers who need large-scale procurement will choose this bulletproof plug-in board.
  2. Silicon carbide ceramics
    The density of silicon carbide ceramics is much lower than that of alumina, and it will not appear very heavy even compared with polyethylene PE. Its price is relatively expensive, four to five times that of alumina ceramics, but its lighter weight can bring better wearing experience and reduce physical consumption. If it is a customer with abundant funds, it is recommended to choose this plug-in board
  3. Boron carbide ceramics
    The price of boron carbide is very expensive, which can reach 8 to 10 times that of silicon carbide. Because of its high value, we usually only use this material on the bulletproof insert plate of NIJ IV. However, compared with such a high price, its density is limited compared with silicon carbide. Occasionally, some local tyrant customers choose to buy this kind of plug-in board.

There are many surface processes of bulletproof insert plate, which are generally divided into two categories: polyurea coating and waterproof cloth outer layer.
The outer layer of the waterproof cloth is a layer of waterproof fabric, which is wrapped on the surface of the bulletproof insert plate. It has the characteristics of simple processing and low price.
Polyurea coating is to evenly spray polyurea on the surface of bulletproof insert plate. Polyurea coating will bring additional weight, which is about 200g heavier than the outer layer of waterproof cloth. However, it can also play a certain defensive effect, and the bullet hole after the bullet is shot is smaller than that of the bulletproof insert plate with cloth as the surface. However, the price of the plug-in board with polyurea coating will also be more expensive than the plug-in board with waterproof cloth outer layer. The specific choice can only depend on individual needs.
